The reconstructions of ancient Greek games were based on historical data and took place in the laboratory of the Association for the Study of Ancient and Educational Games by Giorgos Karatzas.
The first presentation of the collection of Games, which took place in April 2004 at the Peloponnesian Folklore Institution in Nafplion, entitled “Ancient Greek Games–Reconstructions and Adaptations”, gave the opportunity to many visitors, whether they were teachers or not, to come into contact with the subject matter, to be charmed by it, and finally to also recognize the educational dimension of the subject, showing great interest in the further presence of the Exhibit in Cultural Centres, Museums, Schools, etc.
The collection has then since been exhibited in Iraklion, Crete, at the international exhibition “COSMOPOLIS” in Kavala, in schools with the support of the Ministry of Education and finally at the Municipal Gallery of Psychiko in Athens (from December 2004 to February 2005) where educational programs for children in elementary school also took place. These were quite popular and met with great success.
The Association for the Study of Ancient and Educational Games aims to further the distribution and provision of museum copies and modern applications of such particularly interesting games, since besides being recreational games they accentuate perception, imagination as well as knowledge. A characteristic example is “Archimedes’ Stomachion”, a game Archimedes used with his students in order to improve their perception, imagination and the sharpness of their minds.
